The coastal town of Varkala is a highly frequented place for its quiet beach and the renowned Janardana Swamy Temple. Located 51 km (approx. 32 miles) north-west of Trivandrum, Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where you can find unique cliffs adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These special cliffs are popular of several water spouts and spas.
The most attractive feature of this small place is the holy shrine of Janardana Swamy. This 12th century temple (more than 900 years old) is an important Vaishnav shrine of India. Because of its religious importance, it is considered as 'Dakshin Kashi' (Benares of south India). This holy Hindu shrine is located at a close proximity to the Papanasam beach. The waters of this beach are considered holy which wash away sins, and good for Ayurveda treatment as well.
Apart from that, Varkala beach is one of the quiet beaches of Kerala. It resembles Kovalam beach in its charm. All the adventure enthusiasts and water sports lovers can try out a number of water sports like parasailing, scuba diving, windsurfing and deep sea fishing at Varkala beach.
