St Francis Church is one of the famous attractions of Kerala. Fashioned in a wonderful European architectural style, the church was built by the Europeans in the year 1510. The Church is dedicated to Santo Antonio, a great saint of Portugal. Located in Cochin, the Church is made of granite. You can even relax in the peaceful and beautiful gardens of the church. The original name of the church was St. Antonio Church, which was later changed to St. Francis Church in the year 1663. The church was given a face-life by the Dutch, who also transformed it into a protestant church. It was later labeled as Anglican church.
It is at the St. Francis Church where Vasco-da-gama, a renowned Portuguese explorer was buried after his death in 1524. According to the historic records Vasco-da-Gama came to India in 1502 and stayed here for 22 years. Later in the year 1538, the remains of this great personality were transported to Portuguese. Don't forget to see the gravestone of Vasco-da-Gama in the church complex. The complex also houses the graves of the Portuguese nobles.
The interiors of the Church are decorated with mesmerizing paintings. You can participate in the worship meetings, which are conducted on every Sunday and the historic days.
