Sabarimala Temple

Sabarimala Temple

Built in honor of Lord Ayyappan, Sabarimala Temple is ideally nestled at an altitude of 3,000 m above sea level. It is an important Hindu pilgrimage where devotees and tourists come from far and wide. The temple is surrounded by gorgeous mountains and forests offering picturesque views and peaceful ambiance. The legend has it that the Lord after killing the demon, Mahishi, meditated on the Sabari hill with his two wives for the welfare of humanity.

While trekking through the path leading to the temple, you will enjoy amazing views of the surroundings. All devotees, irrespective of their religion or caste are allowed to visit the temple. The devotees are expected to follow a vratham ,during a particular period, according to which they must refrain from non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tobacco, sex, abusive language, hair cut and shaving. While visiting the temple devotees wear black colored dress with a special mala. However, the tradition of Vratham is not as strict as it was in the past.

There is a strange thing about the temple. Only women over the age of 50, men and girls below the age of 10 are allowed to visit the temple. Young girls are not allowed inside the temple. Devotees go on a fast, which stretches for 41 days, thus preparing themselves for the Sabarimala pilgrimage. Ghee in a coconut shell is offered by devotees to the lord.
