The state of Tamil Nadu has some of the monuments of great artistic value that speak of the greatness of the bygone era. The state boasts of not only being the home to more than 30,000 temples but also for showcasing some of the excellent examples of the Dravidian style of architecture. Intricacy, decorated monolithic pillars, huge vimanas (storeys) and gopurams (towering gateways to the temple complex) are the major characteristics of the temples of Tamil Nadu. Most of these ancient temples were constructed in brick and mortar, while a few were drawn out of caves. Some of them have also been declared 'World Heritage Sites' by the UNESCO.
