Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple

Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple is one of the highly revered pilgrimage sites of South India. The temple is located in Guruvayur town in Thrissur district of Kerala. This temple finds mention in a 14th century Tamil work called 'Kokasandesam', in which it is mentioned as Kuruvayur. According to the legend the foundation of the temple was laid by Guru(Brihaspati), the adviser of Gods and Vaayu, the wind God.

Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple houses a beautiful idol of youthful form of Lord Krishna. Legend goes that this idol was originally worshiped by lord Brahma. The lord donated the idol to lord Vishnu who kept it with him at Dwarka. When Dwarka was about to be destroyed, lord Krishna asked Uddhava to take Vayu's and Guru's help in finding a safe place for the idol. Guru and Vayu consecrated the idol at Guruvayur.

It is mentioned in the Sri Narada Purana that by worshiping lord Krishna at Guruvayur Shri Krishna Temple, Emperor Janemejaya( the great-grandson of Arjuna the warrior hero of the Mahabharata) was cured of leprosy.

The temple architecture is simple and the main shrine is visible from the entrance. Thssse temple walls are decorated with wonderful mural paintings depicting the scenes from the Puranas. The temple complex also houses two other shrines dedicated to goddess Durga( Edathidettukkavu Bhagawati) and Sastha. Various festivals are celebrated with great joy in the temple.
