Eravikulam National Park

A home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr( mountain goat), Eravikulam National Park is one of the most popular wildlife destinations of South India. In fact it boasts of the largest population of Nilgiri Tahr in the world. It is located in the Idukki district at a distance of 15 km from Munnar. Apart from this fascinating wildlife species, the Park houses a wide range of other wildlife such as tiger, leopard, gaur, Atlas Moth, sambhar, elephant, Nilgiri Tahr, Lion-Tailed Macaque and langur.

Atlas Moth is another striking attraction of Eravikulam National Park. It is the largest moth in the world. Established with an aim to preserve the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, the Park covers an area of 97 sq km. It is also under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage committee to be selected as a World Heritage Site.  Anamudi (2,695 m) is the highest peak of South India, which is located in the Eravikulam National Park. Trekking is something you can enjoy very well in the Park.

The landscape of the Park is dotted with three types of plant communities- shrublands, forests and grasslands. Several perennial streams flows through the Park and merge together to form tributaries of the Periyar river, Chalakudiyar river and Cauvery river. A wide variety of bird species is another possession of the Park. Around 132 avian species have been recorded in the Park. Some of the enchanting birs species found here are Black-and-orange flycatcher, Nilgiri pipit, Nilgiri wood pigeon, Yellow-throated marten and White bellied shortwing.

The Park operates six mini-buses for visitors. Private vehicles are not allowed in the Park. The Park's entry fee for Indians is Rs 35 and foreigners are charged Rs 200 per head.
