Thousand Pillar Temple

Thousand Pillar Temple

When it comes to the fascinating attractions of the Warangal city, the Thousand Pillar Temple is undoubtedly a unique one. This famous and ancient temple was built in 1163 AD, by King Rudra Deva. Located near the Hanamkonda-Warangal highway, this important monument is a treat to eyes & senses as well as a perfect place to spend some quality time in peaceful ambiance. The reverberation of bells, chirping of birds and gentle breeze further add some more beauty to the temple.

Architecture

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Surya (the Sun), the temple is situated on a 1m high platform, on the slopes of the Hanumakonda hill offering magnificent views of the surroundings. The prime feature of the temple is that it is built in the shape of a star. One can see many small Shiva Lingam shrines surrounding the gardens. Its richly and intricately carved pillars, perforated screens, wonderful icons, rock-cut elephants and detailed sculptures are quite popular among the tourists.

Another attraction is the monolithic statue of Nandi that certainly reminds the rich taste of the rulers. The colossal structure of Nandi is carved out of a single piece of black basalt. All these features make the temple not only a brilliant example of Kakatiya style of architecture but also an example of the expertise of the craftsmen of the period.
