Chowmahalla Palace

'Epitome of royalty' is an apt phrase for a stunning structure like Chowmahalla Palace. Brimming with history and heritage, the palace still retains its old-world charm. This is the royal place where the Nizams used to entertain their royal guests. It was once the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty. In Urdu, the word Chow means 'four' and Mahalat means 'Palaces'.

History

Chowmahalla Palace was built in the 18th century and its construction took around 10 years. Its foundation was laid by Salabat Jung in the year 1750 but it was completed in 1869 by the V Nizam of Hyderabad. It is said that the Nawab was highly inspired by the Shah of Iran's palace in Tehran. As a result he built Chowmahalla Palace, trying to give it the feel of the Shah of Iran's palace.

Architecture

Sprawling over an area of 14 acres, the palace is famous for its architectural brilliance. Its a combination of different architectural styles, all put together in an elegant manner. The palace takes pride in its eye-catching Mughal domes, arches and the Persian elements such as the fabulous stucco work.

Its complex has two wonderful courtyards, southern courtyard and northern courtyard. The palace complex boasts of stunning palaces, the huge Khilwat( Durbar Hall), fountains and refreshing gardens. The squeaky clean environment is one of the main features of the palace. The crystal chandeliers are simply mesmerizing. 


Attractions

Khilwat Mubarak
It is the most fascinating attraction of the palace. It once housed the Takht-e-Nishan or the royal seat of the Nizam. Several ceremonies, including the religious ones, used to be celebrated here. This hall has 19 bewitching Chandeliers of Belgian crystal.

Clock Tower
The Clock Tower at the main gate of the palace has a clock, which is called Khilwat Clock. This clock is working since 250 years old. It is maintained by a clock repairer.

Council Hall
It is the place where the Nizam used to meet the important officials and guests. It houses a wonderful collection of manuscripts and books.

Roshan Bangla
This apartment got its name from the Roshan Begum, the mother of Nizam VI. The Nizam used to live here.
