The Indrakeeladri hillock in Vijayawada is a centre of attraction among tourists because of a number of fascinating elements. Another such element is the famous Subramanya Swamy Temple. This beautiful and ancient temple overlooks the entire city and offers panoramic views of the Krishna river as well. The temple is maintained by a family, known as Iddipilli. The temple draws countless devotees from Tamil Nadu and other nearby states.

Skanda Shashti festival is a popular occasion when the temple is visited by thousands of devotees. Watching the traditional art/dance/music forms along with the ritual activities with the picturesque Indrakeeladri hills in the background is actually a treat to the senses.

Subramanya Swamy is one of the most popular temples in Vijayawada. The temple is located about 50 km on the Quilon-Allappey Road. It boasts of being the oldest and most important of all the Subrahmanya temples in Kerala. There is an image of the deity with four arms, which is also the biggest of its kind. The idol here is believed to have been originally worshipped by Lord Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

According to a legend, a virtuous man had a dream of this wonderful image lying on a river-bed. Later the image was brought out from the river and enshrined in the present temple.
