The Marakata Rajarajeswari Devi Temple, the first of its kind in the world, belongs to Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Ashram. The temple is dedicated to mother Goddess Rajarajeswari who is the chief deity for all the Sri Vidya Upasakas (Seekers of Sri Vidya). The temple worships for the Sri Chakra, which is considered the body principle of Shiva and Shakti aspects. Based on this concept, the entire universe is believed to be a Sri Chakra. Basically, the phenomenon of visualizing the manifestation of this Sri Chakra in the body in a subtle form is called the secret of Sri Vidya.
The people who worship this Sri Chakra with internal contemplation, assuming that their bodies are Sri Chakra, become great 'Yogis'. The founder of Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Ashram, Avadhoota Datta Peethadhipathi His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji, is a great Yogi. He has been visiting Vijayawada since 1969. Later, the Ashram was established in the year 1975.
Architectural Uniqueness
The foremost fascinating fact about the temple is that it is completely built with stone with intricate architecture symbolizing Sri Chakra- the abode of mother Goddess. Even the idol of Mother Goddess is carved out of Green Aventurine/Emerald (Marakata). The legendary poet Kalidasa has referred to Mother Goddess as 'Marakata Syama', which literally means 'one who is dark in colour resembling Marakata'.
Another special feature of the temple is that the Nine Avaranas (Circumferences), Six Chakras, their Deities, Nava Durgas (Nine Incarnations of Goddess Durga Devi), 18 Ashtadasa Shakti Peethas, and other allied energies are wonderfully depicted in stones and sculptures. While wandering the temple, you can see 108 Yakshas at the lowermost part of the temple, who seem to be carrying the entire Mother’s temple on their shoulders. Besides, beautiful elephants are carved out in the second layer, which represent auspiciousness, prosperity and knowledge. This is the reason why during all the celebrations elephants are used for processions.
