Monolithic Bull

Located in the Virupaksha Bazaar in Hampi, the Monolithic Bull is a must-see attraction, offering a visual treat to the eyes. Its brilliant architectural beauty is notable. It is locally known as Yeduru Basavanna or Nandi. Nandi is the vehicle of Lord Shiva and is also the gatekeeper of the lord and his consort goddess Parvati in Hindu mythology. Any temple dedicated to lord Shiva always houses a statue of Nandi bull. According to the Hindu mythology, the bull was born out of the right side of Lord Vishnu and was given as a son to the sage Salankayana. According to the legend, it was Nandi bull who cursed Ravana that his kingdom would be burnt by Vanara (monkey).

The Monolithic Bull is located inside a two storied pavilion built on a raised platform. The surroundings of the pavilion is really picturesque. The huge boulders around the pavilion gives it a dramatic effect. The bull is decorated beautifully and looks very attractive. It is worshiped by many a devotees who come here from far and wide. It stands facing the Virupaksha temple of Lord Shiva, which is situated nearby. Located near the statue of the bull is a huge lamp with metal spikes, which is notable. There is a shrine located to the left side of the bull, which is known as Raya's Temple.
