Once a bustling temple street of Hampi, Courtesan's Street is dotted with brilliant structures. Lying in front of the beautiful Achyta Raya's Temple, the street takes immense pride in its meticulously and exquisitely carved pillars scattered on both sides of the street. These pillars were once the charm of the pavilions located on either side of the street. During the rule of the Chola empire, this street was famous for its pearls, gems, ivory and several other semi-precious and precious stones. During that time many a merchants used to come to this street from far and wide. This wonderful street also finds mention in the literature of that era.
Showcasing the glorious history of Hampi, the Courtesan's Street occupies an area, which is half a kilometer in length and fifty kilometer in width. Today, it occupies a significant place on the itineraries of tourists who come to explore a World Heritage Site, Hampi.
A striking attraction on the street is a big rectangular tank, which is linked with the Achyuta temple. Surrounding the tank are the arresting ruins of the pillared pavilion. The base of these pillars have a row of beautifully carved elephants. The rectangular platform at the center of the tank is the place where the images of the gods and goddesses used to be kept during the annual boat festival of the temple.
Another attraction of the street worth seeing is the ruins of two ramp-like structures. During the bygone era, the temple chariot used to be kept here.
