As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to Lord Rama. One can see huge idols of Lord Rama, his brother Laxman and his wife Sita in standing posture. These figures are carved out of a natural boulder. Both Rama and Laxman are holding bows (Kodanda) in their left hands and arrows in their right hands. Hence, the temple gets its name Kodanda Rama Temple.
Though the town of Hampi is dotted with numerous temples, the Kodanda Rama Temple is of much importance. The temple faces the holy bathing ghat, Chakrathirtha, and acquires more religious than architectural significance.
Myth Associated
People believe that this is the place where Lord Rama killed Bali and crowned Sugreeva as the King of Kishkhinda. Sugreeva then worshiped for Rama by making a temple here.
Architecture
Lord Rama, being an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, has Adishesha – the seven hooded serpent – over his head. The rectangular 'Garbha Gruha', sanctum sanctorum, enshrines the idols of Shri Ram, Sita, and Laxman which are about 15 feet high.
The temples dedicated to Lord Sudarshana and Yantrodharaka Anjaneya are also located quite close to this temple.
Basically, the temple is situated towards the east of Hampi at the end of the Virupaksha Bazaar. It is so close to the river Tungabhadra that during the rainy season, water flows over the steps of the temple.
