Auroville is a dynamic town, which is truly the pride of Pondicherry. A symbol of unity in diversity, this town is popularly known as the 'City of Dawn'. Located 10 km from the north of Pondicherry, this town is best known as the 'Universal Town'. It houses people belonging to various nationalities, beliefs and traditions who live here peacefully, respecting each other as human beings. The town is resided by around 1, 100 people from around 30 countries. So, a visit to the town offers a great opportunity to interact with people from different parts of the world.
Dedicated to the concept of Human unity, Auroville was established by Mirra Richard(popularly known as The Mother in India) in the year 1968. The inauguration ceremony of this town was attended by guests from around 124 countries. It was a project of Sri Aurobindo Society. The city was designed by the famous French architect Roger Anger. UNESCO provided the financial help for building this town. It is divided into four zones namely the Residential zone, the Industrial zone, the Cultural zone and the International zone. Organic farming, use of alternate energy, environment regeneration and village developmental programs are some of the activities practiced in this wonderful town.
Enjoying gorgeous green and refreshing environment with around 1000 varieties of trees, Auroville is a big hit with tourists from across the globe. This town is rich in flora and fauna, which makes it an environment friendly place. A visit to this town really makes one feel close to nature and humanity.
Another attraction of the town is the Matrimandir, which is a globe like structure with golden discs. Surrounded by twelve lush green gardens, this structure is an architectural marvel. As one moves inside the Matrimandir one will notice a spiraling ramp. It leads upwards to a chamber made in white marble. This chamber is defined as the “Place to find one's consciousness”. Located at its center is a 70 cm crystal ball in a gold mount, which shines when the sun rays fall on the globe from the top of the structure. This crystal ball is a “symbol of future realization”.
